The HSC minimum standard is set at a nationally agreed level of literacy and numeracy required to meet the demands of everyday life and work. It is expected that students, on finishing their HSC, will, at a minimum, be able to do things like:
• Find the time and date of a music concert on an online ticket website
• Calculate the quantity of paint needed to paint a room
• Estimate distance, travel time and costs for a transport route
• Take notes from a lecture or training session
• Create a personal weekly budget in a spreadsheet
• Measure quantities to follow a recipe
• Follow safety instructions in an equipment manual
• Enter data in a computer based management system.
From 2020, all Year 11 and 12 students in NSW must reach the minimum standard of numeracy and literacy to receive an HSC. Please visit http://educationstandards.nsw.edu.au/wps/portal/nesa/11-12/hsc/hsc-minimum-standard for more details. Students will have the opportunity to demonstrate the HSC minimum standard by taking new, short online tests when they are ready in Years 11 or 12. Practice tests are available through the NSW Education Standards Authority website (http://educationstandards.nsw.edu.au/wps/portal/nesa/11-12/hsc/hsc-minimum-standard).
To assist students, Inglebum High School is facilitating a program of preparation that will run in the school library every Wednesday, Week A from 11:24am - 12:24pm. Students from Year 11 will be withdrawn from their Study Skills class and Year 12 students will remain on site to focus on literacy and numeracy strategies. The program is in addition to the quality teaching of the NSW curriculum implemented at Inglebum High School, in order to best prepare students to achieve the minimum standard of literacy and numeracy. We strongly encourage and ask for your support in ensuring that your child attends the sessions in order to maximise their chances of meeting the HSC minimum standard. Students will have two opportunities to sit the relevant tests in Literacy, Numeracy and Writing in a calendar year, which will be scheduled for them as part of this initiative.
