The Kid’s Canteen, Café and Cafeteria project is a whole school initiative that provides students with the opportunity to gain valuable workplace skills and abilities in the fields of Retail, Hospitality and Customer Service.
The project began in 2015 when Ingleburn High School won the Champions of the West competition for Classrooms of the Future.
The Multi-Function Centre consists of a variety of facilities that enable students to gain skills and abilities to assist them to transition successfully into the world of work.
Kid’s Canteen – Opened in January 2016
Students prepare the food, serve the customers, use electronic registers and EFTPOS facilities and reconcile takings at the end of each day. Students complete a Work Placement Assignment, Interview and Resume in preparation for transition into the world of work.
Kid’s Café – Opened in November 2018
Students prepare and sell a variety of hot and cold beverages including juices, tea, coffee, smoothies and milkshakes. Trained students operate the coffee machine and registers, they also complete a Work Placement Assignment and Resume update to assist with their transition into the labour market.
Performance Stage – Stage 1 completed March 2018
This allows students with an interest in performing arts, an opportunity to sing, dance and perform during recess and lunch. This provides the students with quality entertainment while enjoying the facilities of the Multi-Function Centre. Future plans include the purchase of audio visual equipment including, speakers, microphones and amplifier.
Work Stations – Stage 1 completed December 2017
Internet and Charging work stations are provided for students to access wired internet during recess, lunch and study periods. There are 16 stations at present, with another 16 stations planned for completion by December 2019.
Outdoor Entertainment Area - Stage 1 completed August 2018
The outdoor deck of approximately 180m2 provides a location for students to relax during their recess and lunch. The gas BBQ will be used for fund raising and welfare activities. Stage two of the deck will involve the construction of a cover over the space and purchase of additional seating bringing the total number of seats to 64. This is due for completion by December 2019.
Future Plans:
Over the coming years the Multi-function Centre will be used to train staff and students from neighbouring schools to enable them to access facilities they do not have at their own school.
Future tasks include:
Covering the outdoor area
Building the front wall of the Cafeteria
Installing 6 sets of double sliding doors
Providing solar panels to offset increased electricity usage and ensuring project is environmentally friendly
Instigating a complete recycling program that saves the school approximately $20,000 in waste collection fees while gaining approximately $10,000 a year from recycling our waste.
This project could not be possible without the generous support of local business and community organisations.
